Learn the Pipes!

band practiceOSPD welcomes everyone who is interested in learning or playing the pipes. Sincere dedication is required and the student must be willing to commit to regular attendance at weekly group lessons, and to daily personal practice. Once a student has learned the basics on chanter and is ready to progress to the bagpipes they can come to the band for our beginner bagpiper lessons.

Generally a student begins on the practice chanter and learns the basics of notes, scales, and traditional embellishments (grace notes and doublings). We do not give lessons for beginning chanter. We *do* give lessons for beginning bagpipes. If you are a beginner we can direct you to beginning chanter tutors who will get you started with the basics. We are also unable to provide beginner drum lessons. However, we welcome to our drum corps experienced pipe band drummers who currently have a minimum high school level ability to play and read music.

For beginners, if you are interested in information for local beginning chanter tutors, please contact Hart Greenwood at hartgreenwood@gmail.com or Matt Despain at sdespain@rose.edu

OSPD practices and rehearsals are held at Saint Matthews Church, 300 N. Air Depot Blvd., in Midwest City.

Beginners:

  1. Beginning Bagpipes – Thursdays 5:45-6:15pm

Members:

  1. Band Practice Chanter – Thursdays 6:15-7:00pm

    • We recommend you buy a long polypenco practice chanter. They are available from many online bagpipe supply stores. A simple Google search will show many options. No need to get a super expensive one, nor a super cheap one. Go middle of the road and you’ll be fine. Also, we recommend the College of Piping Vol. 1 book …also know as the “green book”. This is the standard for beginner pipers. Our band gives free lessons to new pipers.
Contact me at okscotspipesdrums@gmail.com and I will pass along that info.
